In this article, Jaka will tell you how how to check NIK KTP alias ID card number on line via the internet! Curious?
What is an E-KTP/Electronic ID card?

KTP stands for Identity card. Since it was drafted in 2009, Indonesian citizens (WNI) are especially encouraged to change their old KTP to E-KTP alias electronics-ID CARD.
At the beginning of its implementation, E-KTP started from four major cities in Indonesia, namely: field, Macassar, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar. Considered a success, the E-KTP was finally enforced nationally, gang.
There are many reasons why the government asked us to switch to E-KTP, one of which is the many findings of cases of double ID cards circulating and being used for negative things, such as:
- Avoid paying taxes;
- Concealing their identity, for example criminals who are included in the People's Wanted List (DPO);
- Securing acts of corruption or other forms of crime.
With the E-KTP, it is hoped that public anxiety can subside because now all information is stored digitally, making it difficult to manipulate. Checking your ID card number will also be easier.
Actually, this matter has been set in Law Number 24 of 2013 concerning Population Administration which is written as follows:
Residents are only allowed to have 1 (one) ID card listed with a Population Identification Number (NIK). NIK is the sole identity of each resident and is valid for life for Indonesian citizens and for foreigners according to the validity period of the permanent residence permit.

Population Identification Number (NIK) contained in the E-KTP will be used as the basis for making other documents.
Some of these include making or extending a passport, a driver's license (SIM), to a Taxpayer Identification Number (NPWP).
Not only that, through Presidential Regulation Number 26 Year 2009 The government wants to regulate several things related to E-KTP, such as:
- NIK-based ID cards contain security codes and electronic records as a means of verification and validation of resident identity data.
- The electronic record as referred to in paragraph (1) contains the biodata, signature, photo and fingerprint of the resident concerned.
- Records of all resident fingerprints are stored in the population database.
- All fingerprints of the population as referred to in paragraph (3) are taken when submitting an application for an NIK-based ID card, provided that: For Indonesian citizens, it is carried out in the sub-district; and for foreigners who have a permanent residence permit, it is carried out at the implementing agency.
- The record of the resident's fingerprints contained in the NIK-based KTP as referred to in paragraph (2) contains the fingerprints of the left hand index finger and the right hand index finger of the resident concerned.
- The recording of all fingerprints of the population as referred to in paragraph (3) can be accessed by interested parties in accordance with the laws and regulations.
- Further provisions regarding the procedure for recording fingerprints shall be regulated by a Ministerial Regulation.
Advantages of E-KTP

E-KTP turns out to not only function as self-identity. Because it is valid throughout Indonesia, you can use your E-KTP for various activities.
For example, such as creating a bank account, to applying for a loan on various online loan applications that are currently increasingly widespread, gang.
E-KTP that is integrated directly with database residence belonging to Central Ministry of Home Affairs will certainly increase the level of accuracy of population data. This is how the system looks like!
In addition, the E-KTP in Indonesia is claimed to be more sophisticated than the residence cards owned by China and India. The reason is, our E-KTP is equipped with biometrics and chips at a time.
In terms of security, E-KTP is also difficult to forge and duplicate. Yes, although in some cases, fake or duplicate E-KTPs are still found.
Checking ID cards via the Internet is also possible because the electronic ID card system is integrated with the government's electronic database.
When registering, all ten fingerprints of your hand will be recorded by the officer. However, only the fingerprints of the right thumb and index finger will be entered chips.
Why does the E-KTP use fingerprints? There are at least three reasons as follows, gang.
- Compared to other biometrics, using fingerprints is cheaper,
- The shape of the fingerprint will not change even if the person has a cut on the finger, and
- No fingerprints are the same in this world.
Difference between E-KTP and KTP
Actually, what's the difference between an old ordinary ID card and an electronic ID card? There's a few things, gang. But in full, Jaka has summarized it in the table below, yes!
KTP Old Version | Electronic KTP (E-KTP) |
---|---|
Unable to save data. | Capable of storing data. |
Do not have chips. | Have chips. |
Limited validity period (generally 5 years) | Valid for life |
Material made of laminated plastic or paper | Made of PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate) |
This new system allows the government to check online ID cards in Jakarta and other areas throughout Indonesia more easily and accurately, reducing the possibility of multiple ID cards, and so on.

What is NIK & How to Read NIK?
Photo source: Cards that can be applied by checking KTP online on the government's official website.
When you check your ID card number, you are required to enter your NIK. What is NIC? NIK stands for ID number where the number is unique and singular.
That is, the NIK you have may not be the same as the NIK owned by someone else. NIK consists of 16 digit numbers which are formulated as in the example below:
- 13 is the Provincial Code
- 71 is the Regency or Municipal Code
- 01 is the District Code
- 69 is Date of Birth (female only plus +40)
- 02 is the month of birth
- 57 is the Year of Birth
- 005 is the Resident Registration Number
So, it can be concluded that the first 6 digits indicate where the E-KTP was made. The next 6 digits are the date of birth of the E-KTP holder and the last 4 digits are the population registration number.
But there are exceptions. For female gender, the date of birth will be added to 40. For example, if the person was born on April 13, 1997, then the e-KTP will say "530497".
Then, how do you check your NIK KTP via the internet? This can be done through a trusted government site to see whether or not your parent number is valid.
Obstacles in Making E-KTP Until Now
Photo source: BeritagarAccording to the Director General of Dukcapil, Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, Indonesians should have used E-KTP since January 1, 2015.
However, the deadline for data recording was postponed to September 30, 2016 or in other words, four years had passed.
Again, this process was disrupted by corruption cases involving high-ranking officials or representatives of the people.
Just a note, from 182.5 million Indonesian citizens who are required to obtain an E-KTP, there are around 22 million who have not recorded data to make an E-KTP, you know. Fantastic numbers, huh?
Meanwhile (the latest data) of E-KTPs that have been printed until July 2016 are 156.1 million copies. Residents who do not have an online ID card, of course, will not be able to check their ID & NIK KTP online through any site.
