Differences DOC and DOCX Microsoft Word

DOC

At the beginning of its emergence about 30 years ago, Microsoft used the DOC format for their file extensions. For several years, Word was the only program that could open files with the DOC extension.

Before entering the 2000s, there were several competitors that could open DOC files, but not all formats and settings could run in programs other than Word.

Entering 2008, Microsoft released the latest update for the DOC file so that it can be used in other word processing software. After 2008, various word processing software began to be able to open and edit DOC files even though they were not optimal.

DOCX

Under pressure from competitors who started to create an Open Source version of Office, namely Open Office with the Open Document Format (ODF) extension. Microsoft has finally made file extensions more open to word processing. The extension is DOCX.

Not only has the Word extension changed, Microsoft has also changed the XLSX extension for Sheets (Excel), and PPTX for presentations (PowerPoint).

A new standard was created under the name "Office Open XML". The format is based on Extensible Markup Language which is a better format than binary-based. Office Open XML has various benefits, such as smaller file size, less chance of corruption, better compression of images, etc.

Microsoft itself has officially used the DOCX extension in the 2007 Office series and it continues to the next Office series.
